Who they are:
SOS is a licensed provider with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), serving children and adults across the New River Valley, Roanoke, Mount Rogers, and Piedmont regions. Their services include Supportive In-Home services, Community Coaching, Community Guide, Sponsored Residential, and Mental Health Skill Building.

Their mission:
Promote independence, increased daily living skills, personal empowerment, and improved quality of life through the provision of home and community based services and supports to children and adults with Intellectual Disability (ID), Developmental Disabilities (DD) and/or Mental Health (MH) issues.
What stood out on the visit
Since 2002, they’ve been a steady presence across the New River Valley, and it’s not easy to sustain quality care and staff relationships over more than two decades.
- They’ve been willing to grow and change along the way, rather than sticking to one model or one service area. Over time, they’ve expanded into the Piedmont and Mount Rogers regions and grown their offerings to meet the community’s changing needs.
- The Barnyard Sensory Gym is such a creative approach to sensory-based support. It’s open to the public, too, so this resource is there for families and community members well beyond their client base.
